Even though I’m always taking jabs at the Barcelona chair, still lovin’ Mies van der Rohe.

Architects and architecture buffs, rejoice: Google marks what would be Mies van der Rohe’s 126th birthday.

One day I’d like to have an apartment, a house, a loft with an old, dirty glass roof, exposed brick walls and noisy pipes, glass kitchenware, wooden cabinets, and concrete floors. Carpets separating designated living areas, large papason cushions thrown in corners next to bookcases stuffed with books and magazines, white gauzy curtains covering large windows that are so dirty you can’t see through except for the second and eighth square in a panel of sixteen, but plenty of light filtering through. The sound of traffic buzzing outside, an old fashioned elevator with a door you pull shut instead of pressing a button, a Barcelona chair that faces a window which opens up to a neighbor across the street who, unfortunately, isn’t a male model with a penchant for shirtless yoga.
A couple mattresses on a simple bed frame and a stained blue green wooden chest of drawers. Mismatched frames containing pictures of friends, family, covering windowsills and end-table surfaces. An easel with paint flecks stained on the walls and floor, a bathroom with a porcelain claw-foot tub and a photo enlarger in the corner with chemicals and photo trays kept underneath the sink.
I always hear people chirp, “You don’t get what you don’t ask for.” So this is me asking. This is me putting it into words: This is what I want. Now it’s out there in the universe. The job, the partner, anything else can be figured out later. This is just for me. When it’s time to go home and take a deep breath, this is where I want to be. And with every step, I’m getting a little closer.

10 on 10: #2. Still unpacking. Color coordinating shelves.
Love that wooden box. It came in as a donation to a thrift store that I used to work at and I immediately bought it. Thought it was a new box intended to look old/”vintage” that I could give my little brother (the little boy on the beach in the picture frame) to use for his army figurines. He didn’t care much for it when I showed it to him, so I kept it for myself. There’s a little note etched into the bottom of the box that says, “I bought this box in T.J. Mexico in summer. 1970 ☮” I wonder who that kid grew up to be.

Dream apartment. Exposed brick and ceiling beams, loft-style, three bedrooms, downtown Los Angeles. Who could ask for more?
New goal: After the fall tour and Skifest ‘10 are wrapped up, figuring out a way to make this place mine.
